Can I see my search history on ChatGPT?
You can search your saved chats, projects, images, documents, and some connected files in ChatGPT, but there isn’t a browser-style web search history. Here’s what you can and can’t view, and how to find past conversations fast.
What you can see in ChatGPT
Sidebar search finds items saved in your ChatGPT account or workspace. It can return chats, projects, images, documents, and eligible files, and may include Google Drive files if that source is connected. It searches your content, not the web, and is available to signed-in users on all plans on web, iOS, and Android. Available filters and connected sources can vary by account, workspace, and device (OpenAI Help: Finding your chats, projects, and files).
- Open Search from the sidebar and enter words or phrases. On web, you can also press Ctrl+K (Windows) or Cmd+K (macOS) (OpenAI Help).
- Use filters, when available: All, Chats, Images, Documents, or Projects (OpenAI Help).
- Search can match words in a chat’s title or messages. Regular and archived chats can appear; deleted chats do not. Locked chats do not appear in regular search. To find one, go to Projects > Locked chats and authenticate (OpenAI Help).
What you will not find
- No browser-style web search history list. Web search is a different capability from sidebar search of your saved content (OpenAI Help: Searching the web with ChatGPT; OpenAI Help).
- No recovery of deleted chats through search. If an outdated result briefly lingers, opening it does not restore the chat (OpenAI Help).
If a response used web search, open the citations to verify the source and publication date. Results and citations can be incomplete or incorrect, so checking sources matters (OpenAI Help). For a deeper look at evaluating citations, see our guide How accurate are AI citations?
How to find a past item fast
- Open Search in the ChatGPT sidebar (on desktop web, press Ctrl+K or Cmd+K).
- Type a distinctive word or phrase from the chat title or messages.
- Start with the All filter. Switch to Chats, Documents, or Projects if needed.
- For a locked chat, go to Projects > Locked chats and unlock with your PIN or supported device authentication.
- If looking for a file, check both the search results and your Library or Space, as available in your account (OpenAI Help).
Plan and device differences
- Sidebar search: Available to signed-in users on all plans on web, iOS, and Android; result types, filters, and connected sources may vary (OpenAI Help).
- Web search: Available on Free, Go, Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Edu; even signed-out users can use web search on supported surfaces. Usage is subject to plan limits (OpenAI Help).

- To access a locked chat, open Projects > Locked chats and authenticate (OpenAI Help).
- When web search is used, open citations and verify the details (OpenAI Help).
Quick FAQs
Does ChatGPT keep a list of my past web searches?
No. Web search is separate from sidebar search of your saved content and there is no documented browser-style list (OpenAI Help).
Can I search inside my conversations?
Yes. Sidebar search can match words in a chat’s title or messages. Archived chats remain searchable (OpenAI Help).
Can I recover a deleted chat via search?
No. Deleted chats are removed from your account view and search; opening a lingering result will not restore it (OpenAI Help).
Put this into practice
Check the current account and workspace before concluding that a conversation is missing. Keep browsing history, saved chats and model responses separate, and use the product’s supported history or export controls for private account data.
